New York once more became a center of terrorist attack after a man, believed to be an ISIS sympathizer, plowed into the bike lane, and killed eight people. The suspect, identified as a migrant from Uzbekistan, barreled his truck along the bike path at 100 kph before slamming into a small yellow school bus.
29-year old Sayfullo Saipov reportedly rented the truck using his Florida license. Found inside the truck are handwritten notes in Arabic pledging loyalty to the Islamic State, along with an image of the IS flag. Saipov came into the US from Uzbekistan in 2010. He fathered five and lived in New Jersey as an Uber driver.
US President Donald Trump issued a statement urging Americans not to let IS sympathizers and formerly armed IS fighters to come back to America. Trump also directed immigration authorities to tighten border control.
New York mayor Bill de Blasio can only describe the attack as “cowardly.”
“It’s a very painful day in our city. Horrible tragedy on the West Side. Let me be clear, based on the information we have at this moment, this was an act of terror and a particularly cowardly act of terror aimed at innocent civilians, aimed, at people going about their lives who had no idea what was about to hit them” Mayor de Blasio said.
IS recently suffered its worst defeat in many years after Coalition forces occupied Raqqa, a former IS capital in Iraq.
