President Rodrigo Roa Duterte has ordered the arrests of Caloocan city police operatives involved in the killing of 17-year-old grade 11 student Kian Lloyd Delos Santos, as protests mount against ongoing murders allegedly by anti-drug police operatives.
Duterte’s assurance comes at the height of public protests against Oplan Galugad, an anti-drugs campaign which involves policemen going to depressed communities in the hunt for drug pushers and dependents.
Delos Santos was murdered by Caloocan city operatives several days ago. The teenager is one of 13 residents caught dealing with illicit drugs. PNP Chief Ronald Bato dela Rosa tries to defend his men by casting aspersions to the victim’s father and his uncles. Dela Rosa says the father is involved in drug dealing.
Close relatives and friends disputed what Dela Rosa said. A recent autopsy conducted by Scene of the Crime Operatives revealed that Dela Rosa was killed deliberately. There were no marks on the teenager’s body which indicate that he fought with authorities, contrary to the official report lodged by cops involved in the murders.
Various groups especially students of the UP College of Law held several protest actions in support of calls for a Senate probe on the killing of Delos Santos. Twelve senators have voted to conduct an investigation regarding the killing.
Duterte vowed to put these erring cops in jail. The possibility, however, of Duterte initiating a pardon for these cops remain.
Cops who murdered Leyte mayor Espinosa got a moral boost from Duterte when the president says he’s just waiting for a guilty verdict from the courts and he’ll issue a pardon for them.
